Who's running against Chris Daly?

I didn't know former Sup. Chris Daly was running for state Assembly in the 19th District. Odd -- I've been told he splits his time between Soma and Fairfield, but I had never heard anything about him moving to the West side of town.

But there he is, right on a flier produced by candidate Michael Breyer, who probably doesn't deserve all the attention I'm giving him, but his campaign is so strange. First he's for "old-fashioned San Francisco values" (whatever that means) -- and now he's running against Daly. Who, according to the latest data from the Department of Elections, isn't in the race.

Breyer has a pic of Daly's disembodied head surrounded by a happy meal, a goldfish and a Yellow Pages phonebook, three things that (other) supervisors have had issues with, mostly for very good reasons. Daly didn't introduce the Happy Meal ban or the pet store legislation or the phone books limits; some of that happened after he left the board.

The flier compares Daly's "Wild Antics" to "The Real San Francisco." Which I guess is a conservative place "of old-fashioned neighborhood concerns." (What -- the west side of the city hasn't changed in the past 40 years, since Breyer was a kid?)

Folks, please: Daly's no longer in any public office. He was a good supervisor while he was there and willing to fight for his constituents. But now he owns a bar and works for a union. Aren't we all getting tired of this shit?

that any flimsy context was good enough, huh?

Those were the good old days, Tim, when progressives were briefly a majority on the BofS.

Daly is a fading memory

I think the moderates actually miss Daly. They could put his face on a poster and use him as a punching bag ("Daly is Against This!") and get you to vote on their side.

But Daly is gone now, a fading memory. This ploy isn't going to work anymore.

Tim- I suggest that you actually go to the west side

West of twin peaks is actually pretty different from downtown etc. I think you need to get out more. Probably a pretty smart piece of advertising for that side of the City- running as the Anti- Chris Daly

A paper that attributes everything that happens in this city to the Brown/Burton/Newsom machine really can't throw stones on this issue.

It doesn't matter anyway

The only way that dopey-looking mole-covered face is ever going to show itself in the Assembly, is through a public tour. The big investors banking on him are going to lose their money. They would've been better off buying up Zynga stock.

But this whole situation is instructive in one important way. It just goes to show, once again, that the folks masquerading as "moderates" are nothing of the sort. Phil Ting is as moderate as they come. These same investors would be singing his praises if Ting were running against a progressive. But given the chance, they'll always support someone more conservative. Hell, given the chance, they'd support a Republican. Breyer's just the most conservative candidate these "moderates" think they can get. "Think" being the operative word.

Just in case though... I'd recommend voting for the Republican in June. I already voted for Ting... he's no progressive, but he's the best of the lot. But after the fact, I realized that now that we have our crazy top-2 primary, voting Republican may be the way to go. Ting will make it into the Top-2 no matter what. But to really ensure his win in November, best to give him a Republican opponent and make sure Breyer finishes third. Damn. Wish I'd thought of that earlier before I voted. Still getting used to the fact that different strategies are required to game the new system.

Ting has some merits

Ting has done a great job in uncovering property owners who are not paying their fair share of taxes. I voted for him for mayor for this reason.

As for Daly, the one progressive measure that failed in 2009(?) was his attempt to stop redevelopment in Hunters Point.
