This morning (Fri/11) kicked off with yet another Google bus blockade in San Francisco’s Mission District, only this time housing activists said a Google employee is directly to blame for displacing residents.

The blockade, which took place at 18th and Dolores streets, was short-lived but featured speeches by tenants facing eviction, as well as a giant cardboard cut-out depicting 812 Guerrero, a seven-unit building where tenants are facing eviction under the Ellis Act.

The property owner is Jack Halprin, a lawyer who is the head of eDiscovery, Enterprise for Google. He moved into one of the units after purchasing the building two years ago and served eviction notices on Feb. 26, according to tenant Claudia Triado, a third grade teacher at Fairmount Elementary in San Francisco who lives there with her two-year-old son.

The Bay Guardian left a voice message for Halprin requesting comment. We will update this post if he returns the call.

After the bus blockade, activists proceeded to 812 Guerrero and staged a short rally on the front steps.

Evan Wolkenstein, who teaches Jewish literature at the Jewish Community High School of the Bay, said he’s lived at 812 Guerrero for eight years. Other tenants facing eviction from the property include an artist and a disabled person, he added.

During the Google bus blockade, minutes before police officers arrived to clear a path for the bus by urging protesters onto the sidewalk, Wolkenstein gave a speech about the overall impact the tech sector is having on San Francisco.

This evening, Eviction Free San Francisco will continue its protest activities with a march to the homes of teachers who are facing eviction, beginning at 20th and Dolores streets at 5pm.

have to believe that on some level he actually sees himself as being different from every other white male tech worker and gentrifier of the Mission.

Or perhaps it is a form of self-hatred that is so common among white liberals trying to assuage what they feel is their guilt and shame about, well, I have no idea what they think they have done wrong.

Nah, we beat out a white het couple with a baby.

1) The details of other offers are typically not shared with a buyer because even when in escrow a buyer and seller are still in a potential negotiating situation and so typically it's best not to divulge such information.

2) There are also privacy and confidentiality rules that realtors have to abide by which prevents details of other offers being shared.

It's possible that the seller might have told you later but generally only the seller and the seller's realtor know about failed offers.

In any event it is moot. The asking price was set in anticipation of affluent white bidders and that would have put off any colored people of coloe who might otherwise have been interested but, as a result, probably had to move to Oakland.

You can't spin your way out of this one.

Posted by Guest on Apr. 12, 2014 @ 2:27 pm

Yes, it's pretty funny when an OG (original gentrifier) denounces gentrification.

Why don't you sell your condo to a person of color, and get the fuck out of the Mission, Marcos?

Oh wait, a person of color probably doesn't have enough money to pay full market value for the condo - when the time comes, rest assured that Marcos will sell his condo for every penny he can - probably to one of the evil techies.

Posted by Guest on Apr. 12, 2014 @ 11:16 am

"rest assured that Marcos will sell his condo for every penny he can"

That's ***so*** unfair. Just as Marcos carefully reviewed the real estate records before buying his condo to ensure that no one had ever been evicted from that unit (because, of course, Marcos never would have bought the condo had a rent-controlled tenant been evicted from it in the past),

so Marcos will carefully examine every potential buyer when he sells his condo to ensure that the buyer will complement the traditional rich social fabric of the Mission, and not simply add to the evil gentrification of the Mission.

Marcos will happily accept 70%, 60%, or even just 50% of the "market" price of the condo (because the "market" is evil, after all), in order to ensure that he sells to the appropriate person, even if that person doesn't have anywhere near enough money to outbid the evil rich techies for the unit.

Stop criticizing him!

You all just cannot grok how a property owner does not buy into your property rights über alles religion. That is why you have to make the conversation about me instead of the issues at hand like new arrivals who are transforming our neighborhood out from under us, some, like Halprin, maliciously and willingly.

Posted by marcos on Apr. 12, 2014 @ 2:06 pm

The fact that you are now an old coot and still living in the Mission doesn't mean that you're not part of the white male tech worker gentrification of the Mission.

You are.

And I don't give a crap about that except that you crow about how you didn't gentrify when everyone can easily see that that is exactly what you did.

It's not the deed that sinks you - it's the double standard and your hopeless inability to admit it.

Make it illegal to have tech workers who do not work in SF, live in SF. Or make them pay a special premium/buy a permit to live here. This list can be updated yearly and spot checks can be done to make sure they have their permits on them (since all techies have smart phones it can probably be done through an app). That money can be used to fund local projects. It's a way to get money into the system without burdening poor people.

The brogrammers and the get-rich-quick MBA and marketing people are pretty self evident. I tell my software engineering employer that the reason why I don't wear the company t-shirt is not due to lack of enthusiasm, rather because I've lived here long enough to know that doing so is a signifier of tech douche.

Posted by marcos on Apr. 11, 2014 @ 7:12 pm

You cannot know how many you fail to detect, because you didn't detect them!

Posted by Guest on Apr. 12, 2014 @ 4:15 am

Exactly, those of us who remain undetectable are not the problem. I am not detectable as a tech worker because I've lived here for half of my life and blend in. The arrivistes stick out like tens of thousands of sore thumbs.

Posted by marcos on Apr. 12, 2014 @ 2:02 pm

Try again. You don't seem much different from other techies I know. You're just older - way too old to be a coder.

Posted by Guest on Apr. 12, 2014 @ 2:28 pm

Great idea. Even better, let's make them wear a Yellow Badge on their clothes so we don't accidentally stop people who aren't tech workers to check their "papers".

Posted by Guest on Apr. 11, 2014 @ 7:57 pm

Would you advocate for banning Union members who do not live in San Francisco from working here? Because that's most of them. I doubt you would. But, hey, I wouldn't either. People should be able to live where they choose.

But this whole Google bus controversy is diversionary by design.

Posted by Snoozers on Apr. 11, 2014 @ 10:31 pm

Poor people are the problem, lets get rid of them and then the system does not need so much money for parasites.

Posted by Guest on Apr. 15, 2014 @ 8:07 pm

Posted by marcos on Apr. 11, 2014 @ 6:59 pm

Perfectly targeted...7 fewer rent controlled apartments!

Posted by Guest on Apr. 11, 2014 @ 8:08 pm

So when you sign a "one-year" lease - it really means forever?

What other contracts are invalid that we should know about?

Posted by Guest on Apr. 11, 2014 @ 9:59 pm

Apparently, you have never read a lease. What a douchey thing to say.

Posted by Guest on Apr. 12, 2014 @ 1:46 am

I heard some tech douches who were walking in to Whole Foods on Dolores, say something about one of them who is being harassed daily by his neighbors and has decided to take a job in Seattle and move because living here is just not worth the trouble. Not to mention the expense, another said. And it is really cold, said one. The point you are all missing, said a tall girl with an expensive look about her, is that Seattle is much worse, because there the lower classes are so empowered by having cheaper rents. You'd think they'd get it, said the first one. The tall girl, No, they don't even have a Dolores Park.

Posted by Guest on Apr. 12, 2014 @ 1:44 am

Most poor people are in awe of successful people.

My neighbors know I am a multi-millionaire, and they respect me.

Posted by Guest on Apr. 12, 2014 @ 4:18 am

It is cold, and wet. But it is a beautiful city. However the gentrification is happening there as well. Capitol Hill has changed a lot over the last decade. Seattle does not have rent control, and people are being priced out. There are even tech shuttle protests there. As for Mission Dolores, Seattle has some lovely parks - Volunteer Park, Magnuson Park, Washington Park Arboretum, etc. They're looking at raising the minimum wage to $15/hr and trying to pass additional funding to save transit.

However, one saving grace is that you have three transit agencies that provide primary transit service: King County Metro, Sound Transit, and the Washington State Ferries. Contrast that with here where you have Muni, AC Transit, SamTrans, CalTrain, BART, GG Transit, etc. So a tech worker who wanted to live in the city would potentially need to navigate and pay for monthly passes to two or three different transit agencies, who don't coordinate with each other, to get to work and back. And therein lies the problem - there is no easy, direct way to get from one area to another. The only good regional transit is BART and we never closed the loop.

Anyhoo, as much as I sometimes miss Seattle, it has its own issues. And those cheaper rents are starting to rise. Still cheap compared to SF, but then again, most US cities are.

Posted by robco on Apr. 12, 2014 @ 4:49 pm

This is hysterical reading the comments. Some of the people on here are so blatantly mean and crotchety towards their neighbors it's astonishing. They seem to delight in wishing ill on a school teacher and her toddler. In person, no one would ever take a stance like that, yet on here they sound so completely maniacal, it's difficult to take them seriously. In fact, I don't know that I do, surely they must be laughing when writing such hateful things about their neighbors, their fellow San Franciscans.

7 fewer rent controlled apartments? Perfect? You'd better be nice to your landlord, or else you and your baby will be homeless? When ever someone sits on my stoop, I assault them with a high pressure hose? It works every time...Evil laughter, the lights go dim, and suddenly you notice that your neighbor looks like Boris Karloff and he is looking right at you, smiling.

Posted by Guest on Apr. 12, 2014 @ 1:59 am

We're seeing the frustration on all sides. The current housing laws in San Francisco are shit.

Posted by Guest on Apr. 12, 2014 @ 11:07 am

better or worse. A few people here and there don't amount to a hill of beans, and in any other city the landlord gives you 30 days and you move. Our way, madness lies, and I don't see this property owner's greed as any worse than the tenants who expect a discounted home for life.

Posted by Guest on Apr. 12, 2014 @ 1:45 pm

Please, the rent control property stealing thieves are the neighbors from hell here… so greedy and self absorbed to think they can keep another persons property.

The same people who dislike housing activists do everything they can to make the lives of the homeless nasty, brutish, or short. Well, poor people can live in apartments, or they can live on you sidewalks and parks. There really is no other option.
Many of the current renters were forced out of the homes they thought they owned by the forclosure crisis.
San Francisco has gotten "more left?" Are you kidding? Only a newcomer could say that. It has gotten more neo-con.
And, I am from here. I lived in or near the city most of my life. I've been an anti-eviction activist since 1977, and will remain one until I am immobile, or dead, or the evictions stop. And I won't be pushed off tho somewhere where the locals can rightly say "you're not from here."

You might be pleasantly surprised that the rest of the country isn't as extremely xenophobic as SF is in 2014.

Posted by Guest on Apr. 15, 2014 @ 1:49 pm

This is not what California if about, most everyone is from someplace else, you don't have special rights because you live in San Francisco. The problem is we haven't built enough housing for people who are coming here, the prices go up, developers want to built, people want to rent or buy, but we aren't building enough.

To many lefty types all fighting for different things, open space, low income housing, no new tall building or the fight against the density. This is what is driving people mad, to preserve open space you must go up but you want the open space but not the density. Prices go up, low income housing is not safe from market forces, old owners sell for top dollars, new prices reflect the new prices.

No way to stop expect build housing or stop tech companies from expanding.

Then again that means you have stop buying things that are tech.

No Facebook, No Twitter, No Google, No computer, phones or notebooks. No iBooks, iPads or Online services for you, but you must get everyone to stop buying

Time to pass laws saying we must go back to pre 1940.

I live in the Mission, on South Van Ness, breathing Tech Bus smoke, listening to Tech Bus roar, maneuvering around them. I know the Google buses are MUCH BIGGER and MUCH MORE PLENTIFUL than any of the other shuttle buses like CPMC or Academy of Art. In fact, according to the following article and recent research, total daily number of tech bus riders to/from Silicon Valley is about 1/3 of the daily Caltrain ridership, or about 15,000 people. Those people could be taking public transit, which would benefit the entire region, rather than benefiting the private companies at the expense of the people who have to live on the bus routes.

Also...
It may be legal, but it is not ethical to buy a building full of people, and then evict everyone. Tenants with rent control are not parasites. We are the teachers, immigrants, workers, students, disabled people, and grandmothers who make this a neighborhood. Evict us and you will have no vibrant community to sell prospective buyers. Judging by his real estate speculation history, my landlord will throw out me and my fellow tenants, raise rents from $900 to $3000 per 4-bedroom, and re-rent the same units for $9000. You better believe, we will protest.

Posted by Guest on Apr. 20, 2014 @ 10:06 pm

Did you approach your landlord and say "Hey, I know I've got a great deal here. I can't afford the going market rate but I'd like to pay you just a little more per month so that you don't feel taken advantage of."

Of course you didn't. You took your deep discount silently and with a self-satisfied smile, feeling proud of yourself for getting yours.

Oh, and I hate to burst your little arrogant bubble, but your "vibrant community" is not a selling point for those in the market to buy. What they want is the property itself, the beautiful weather, proximity to the ocean, and the spirit of innovation and change. As far as I can tell, you're not responsible for the natural resources and you are violently opposed to any kind of change.

Speaking candidly, people like you are just jealous that people like me have managed to save money and buy property. I don't work in tech and I'm not rich; not even close. I'm middle-class, at best (not that this concept even exists anymore) and I had to scrape and save for decades to accumulate enough for my first down payment. Sure, I was a renter for years, but I made my choices. I didn't spend my money on frivolous things and I didn't have children when I couldn't afford it.
